Barge is a Group Feature in the Sky phone system that enables members of one group to silently monitor members of another group including the ability to whisper (coach) a caller and join (conference) a call in progress.
Using Barge
Use the instructions below for the brand of phone used in your Sky phone system:
Using IP 400 Series Phones
To barge a call using a 400 series phone, you have to first enter the listen-only "silent monitor" mode. (The equivalent soft key used on Cisco phones is listed in parenthesis below.)
- (Listen) - Dial *17 and then dial the extension you want to monitor to enter "silent monitor" mode. You can listen to the call, but the parties on the call cannot hear you when you speak. While monitoring the call, the following soft keys are available:
- (Whisper) - Press the Coach soft key and the user of the extension you are monitoring can hear you, but the other party connected to that extension cannot hear you. This feature is also known as "whisper." To return to "silent monitor" mode, press the Sil Mon soft key.
- (Conf) - Press the Barge soft key to create a conference call that provides you with moderator control. All parties on the call are able to listen to and speak with each other. To view a list of participants on the call, press the Show soft key.
Note that you can barge any active call for all users that you have permission to barge, but the ability to view a list of active calls that can be barged is not displayed on IP 400 series phones.
Using Cisco 7900-Series Phones
- Press the Services button.
- Select the Barge menu option from Services. A list of active calls that can be barged from this phone are displayed.
- Select the active call you wish to barge by using the scroll button and the Select soft key, or by using the keypad. The call details are displayed on the phone's screen.
- You can choose from the following soft key options:
- Press the Listen soft key to listen to the call (participants are not aware that you are listening). While listening to a call, you can:
- Press the Whisper soft key to speak to the party you are barging without the other party hearing you. The party to which you are whispering hears a brief tone indicating you are on the call.
- Press the Conf soft key to create a conference call (as described below).
- Press the Conf soft key to create a conference call that provides you with moderator control. All parties on the call are able to listen to and speak with each other.
Requesting Changes to Barge Groups
To make changes to the barge groups in your phone system, Authorized Contacts (Decision Makers and Phone Managers) can create a Support Case to communicate their request to Support. For each barge group that you want created or modified, provide the names, phone numbers, and locations of the members of your organization who should be able to:
- Barge others' calls
- Have others barge their calls
