Connecting Your Phone to a Power Supply
Depending on your network, phones are powered by Power over Ethernet (PoE) or external power. If you need to connect your phone to a power supply, review the following sections to make the proper connections.
- Power over Ethernet (PoE) - Utilizes a network switch to provide power through the Ethernet cable that you attach to the phone.
- Replacing an existing phone - If the Ethernet cable that provides a connection to the network connects directly to your existing phone's switch port and another Ethernet cable connects your existing phone's computer port to your computer, simply unplug the cables connected to your old phone and plug them into your new phone.
- Adding a new phone - If the Ethernet cable that provides a connection to the network connects directly to your computer, unplug the Ethernet cable from your computer and plug it into your new phone's switch port (labeled with "SW" or a network diagram icon). Using another Ethernet cable, plug one end into your new phone's computer port (labeled with "PC" or a computer icon) and the other end into your computer.
- External Power - Utilizes a separate power supply (Power Brick or PoE Injector) that you plug into an electrical outlet when your network does not provide power to your phone. When you are using a:
- 400-series IP phone - Connect a PoE Injector using the instructions on page 2 of the IP Phone 480/480g/485g Quick Install guide.
- Cisco 7900-series IP phone - Connect a Power Brick or PoE Injector into the back of the phone and connect the Ethernet cables as described in the Power over Ethernet (PoE) instructions above.
