The Sky and MiCloud phone systems can be connected to customer locations in different ways depending on the customer's requirements. All connectivity options require the presence of backup connectivity to ensure redundancy.

FAQ

Single T1

  • 500Kb is reserved for voice and 1Mb is available for data.
  • If more bandwidth is needed for voice, it is acquired from the data channel.
  • The 1mb for data cannot be exceeded.

Load Balanced

This is for customers who need more than 1 Mb for data. It is recommended for medium and large-sized businesses needing more bandwidth than available from a single T1 and clients running high bandwidth applications like streaming media or video conferencing.

MPPP

For customers who need more than 1 Mb for voice, we use Multi-Link Point-to-Point Protocol (MPPP) to "bond" the circuits and increase the network throughput.

Off-net

Should none of the RingCentral provided connectivity options suit your company's bandwidth needs, you can always connect to us through a third party circuit as an off-net customer.

FAQ

Q: How much bandwidth do I need?
A: The most important factor to consider in choosing a connectivity option is usually data bandwidth requirements. Voice takes very little bandwidth: a simultaneous voice call consumes roughly 2% of a T1 (30K/1,544K). Callers that get voicemail, people on hold, or employees not actually talking do not consume bandwidth. Most businesses have peak capacity needs of about 1/6 of their total phone counts. If you are running high bandwidth applications like streaming media and video conferencing, or if your data needs exceed 2Mb, your best option is to use a third party provider for your data needs and a single T1 circuit for voice.

Q: What happens if my T1 goes down?
A: We will work with you to ensure that your backup connectivity automatically fails over if your main T1 goes down. If the T1 goes down, there will not be a connection loss, though there may be a pause before the T1 fails to backup connectivity.

Q: What happens if there is a complete black out in the city and we lose our power?
A: You will always receive voicemail and Auto Attendants. If power goes out and someone calls to one of your main lines, calls will go directly to the Auto Attendant and callers can use the Dial By Name directory to dial through to the employees personal voicemail. If anyone calls one of you during a blackout, it would go to voicemail as well. Employees can access voicemail from an outside line. Also, when we program phone profiles into our system, we can also program in numbers for employee cell and home phones. If there is a black out, we can have inbound phone calls forward to these cell phone or home phone numbers.

Q: Would it be important to setup a regular telephone line somewhere within the office?
A: Setting up a POTS line can be beneficial. For some customers, it is recommended to set up a fax number on a separate analog phone line, so in case of a power failure, the company can disconnect the fax machine and set up an analog phone to this line.
