Information

You can connect a phone to your MiCloud phone system from a remote location, such as a home office. Using a remote phone provides access to all the phone features that are available from your desk phone in your main office, including the ability to directly dial other users in your MiCloud system and access voicemail from your phone.

The following items are required when configuring and using a remote phone:

  • A MiCloud Essentials, Premier, or Elite phone profile
  • An IP phone supported by MiCloud (with power supply); see MiCloud Supported Devices for a list of supported phones
  • An always-on broadband connection with a data rate of at least 128 kbps (most cable and DSL modems meet this criteria)
  • A router and/or modem capable of providing the phone with a private IP address
  • Cat 5 Ethernet cable

NOTE: Either you or your IT Department are responsible for the purchase and maintenance of any cables, routers, hubs, Network Address Translation (NAT) devices, PC network cards, modems, switches, or other network equipment needed for configuring remote phones. Your phone system administrator is responsible for the purchase of any IP phones, power supplies, and phone profiles needed for configuring remote phones. The specific equipment required for each remote phone installation depends on the broadband internet service provider.

Connecting a Remote Phone to Your Network

You can connect a remote phone to your network in one of the following ways:

  • Connect your modem to your phone, and then connect your phone to your computer. Ensure that your phone is also connected to a power source.
  • Follow the diagram below to connect your phone to your network. Ensure that your phone is also connected to a power source.

Configuring the Firewall Settings

If you have a firewall, the firewall settings must be configured to allow outbound and inbound traffic to and from the following ports in order for a remote phone to communicate with the MiCloud phone system over a broadband internet connection:

  • 5060 TCP/UDP
  • 5061 TCP
  • 80 TCP
  • 443 TCP/UDP
  • 8001 TCP
  • 10000-65535 UDP

NOTE: Depending on the firewall type, you may not be able to specify individual ports or port ranges. In this situation, we recommend you open all outbound and inbound traffic to and from your  MiCloud phone system.
